I Have One Thing to Say...

Aubrey Longley-Cook contributes his incredible animations to "(De)Tangled."

Editor's Note

It was love at first sight when we saw Aubrey Longley-Cook's animated embroideries of RuPaul. Leading a 35-participant workshop, Longley-Cook called on many hands to cross stitch the multiple images that form the looping GIFs you see here. The images recall the moment RuPaul transitioned from relatively unknown drag queen to national icon with her 1992 music video, Supermodel. The blonde beehive, the crisscrossing threads, the months of labor, the extraordinary transformation, the project captures the often hard work of self-presentation and self-celebration that is at the heart of "(De)Tangled."
