Staple Goods has been on a roll with painting shows recently. This month, Mary Rooney shows a selection of new paintings in “Extempore.” The works evidence the artist’s playful use of color in her own “process of improvisation,” building each composition one mark at a time. Many of the pieces in the exhibition are diptychs, and Rooney’s energetic brushstrokes often seem to jump back and forth between the works’ partner canvases.

“Extempore” is on view through October 4. Staple Goods is open to the public Saturday and Sunday, 12 - 5 pm.
