Bill Yates’ “Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink” at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art includes a selection of works from the photographer’s extensive documentation of a Florida skating rink. In September 1972, Yates stumbled upon the Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink and quickly immersed himself in the hordes of youth that would make their way there each weekend. A few years ago, the photographer rediscovered over 600 negatives from his time at the rink and began scanning, printing, and exhibiting them. Yates’ images manage to capture not only the specificities of the Sweetheart and its patrons, but also the essence of an iconic—and now past—era of Americana.

“Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink” is organized by Richard McCabe, Curator of Photography at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The exhibition is on view through January 17, 2016.
