Space Is the Place

In a new digital artist project, the anonymous creator of a mysterious Instagram account envisions a space-age future for Louisiana’s third-tallest building.

Editor's Note

Three months ago, an Instagram account went live, imagining new, surreal uses for the abandoned Plaza Tower, which sits in New Orleans’ Central Business District at the corner of Loyola and Howard Avenues. The Tower, which was the tallest building in the city when it was built in 1969, never encouraged the construction of other skyscrapers nearby as was hoped. It fell into disrepair after its failure to retain tenants, even under a variety of owners and developers. We asked Tower Fantasy, the anonymous entity behind the social-media feed, to create a new series of images based on the genesis of the project, which was inspired by conversations about space, place, and Sun Ra.
