Solitary Gardens and Sula Janet Evans dedicate the first of the initiative’s parks, which will open in spring 2016. Conceived by artist Jackie Sumell, Solitary Gardens asks visitors to “imagine a landscape without prisons” by using the size and scale of standard solitary-confinement cells—six feet by nine feet—to produce a public space in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward.
