“Surprise!,” an exhibition of new works by Jackie Sumell at The Art Salon, opens on May 5 with a reception from 6 to 9 pm. Sumell is best known for her project “The House That Herman Built,” in which Sumell worked with Joshua Wallace, who has been in solitary confinement for over 38 years at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, to describe his dream home. Sumell helped manifest Wallace’s response as sculpture, a community outreach project, and a corresponding book.
Sumell will have her first solo exhibition in New Orleans at The Art Salon, which will coincide with a reading by her brother, Matt Sumell, hosted by Room 220 at Antenna Gallery.

The opening reception for Jackie Sumell’s “Surprise!” is free and open to the public. The exhibition is on view till May 27.
